View finding a job like selling yourself. LinkedIn serves as a market for buyers (employers). Sell your accomplishments, projects and skills in one place and put quality time into building that place!
A few pieces of advice:
-
-
- Choose a professional photo of yourself.
- Choose a related background photo for your profile.
- Get a custom URL (linkedin.com/yourfullname)
- Use your target job descriptions to your advantage. Look at the words and phrases in the job descriptions of the positions you’re after, what recruiters are searching for. Insert them throughout your summary and experience.
- Write a summary in three to five lines. Avoid clichés such as “creativity,” “effective” or “analytical” like the plague. Recruiters just pass over them. Describe yourself more specifically.
- Treat your profile like a resumé. Don’t just list job duties—highlight your best accomplishments!
- Use the first person. Don’t use it on your resume, but do so on LinkedIn (“I’m a passionate developer who created 10 websites last year,” NOT (“Mike is a passionate developer who…”).
- Get personal. Your profile doesn’t work like a resume or CV. Write a conversation about your personality. Introduce recruiters to your values and passions.
- Request one recommendation each month. When someone says, “You did a great job on that project!” ask them for a snapshot of that success in the form of a recommendation.
- Tidy up your endorsements. People will endorse you for all sorts of skills but remove any irrelevant ones. Don’t lie about your skill set!
